About Boehringer Ingelheim
Boehringer Ingelheim was founded in Ingelheim am Rhein (Germany) in 1885, where the corporate headquarters remains today. In 1971, Boehringer Ingelheim, Ltd. was established in the United States to market respiratory and cardiovascular medications. Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation was later established in 1986 to serve as the parent organization in the United States for the original pharmaceutical company and its subsequent acquisitions.
Marking the expansion of its pharmaceutical operations into North America, the corporation acquired Roxane Laboratories, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio in 1978. Boehringer Ingelheim entered into the hospital market in 1997 with the acquisition of Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., a contract manufacturer of lyophilized products who also markets a select line of specialty injectables through its Bedford Laboratories division. In 1999, Boehringer Ingelheim Consumer Health Care Products was established to market over-the-counter healthcare products.
Other acquisitions followed, including Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation’s Fine Chemicals division first established in the United States in the 1970s. Located in Petersburg, VA, Boehringer Ingelheim Chemicals, Inc. produces drug substances, intermediates for the pharmaceutical industry, and currently serves as the company’s core fine chemicals business unit in the United States. In 1981, Boehringer Ingelheim entered the animal healthcare arena, purchasing Anchor Serum Company, which became the foundation for Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., which is a leading supplier of animal health products for livestock producers and veterinarians.
